About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Taipei - Guangdong

Swedish citizen living in Taipei.

What would be the best way of entering Dongguan in the Guangdong province?
1. Taipei - flight > Hong Kong - bus > Dongguan ?
2. Taipei - flight > Shenzhen airport - bus > Dongguan ?
Will any of these ways compromise the allowed visit length?

Would I be eligible for the 144hrs extended visit?

How many times per year am I allowed to make this trip?

Can I be on a business trip, meeting with vendors during my trip? or is the TWOV only tourist related?
(not working for a Chinese company but a foreign one in Taiwan)

Best regards,
Emil

Part 1:
Emil, there is no such a think as 144 hours extended visit. There is just 144 hour visa free transit.

In other words, you just have to create an itinerary that will make Dongguan or better to talk about Guangdong province where Dongguan is located.

So, your first itinerary is not eligible because to enjoy 144 hour visa free transit, you have to fly into Guangdong province, being it Shenzhen or Guangzhou airport by direct (it has to be nonstop) flight from Taiwan. When you land in Guangdong province, you are free to travel within the entire province freely, Dongguan included.

Part 2:
Now, another essential detail is required. To be in real transit, you will have to exit from Guangdong province to a third country or eligible territory and that means that you cannot fly directly back to Taiwan, but you can exit to Hong Kong for example. It is easy because when you exit toward Hong Kong, you can use a ferry. To use a ferry, you will choose several departure ports like Pazhou (located quite centrally in Guangzhou, next to Canton Fair Complex), Nansha (south from Guangzhou), Humen in Dongguan (ferries from this port go directly to HK airport Skypier, so you have to coordinate this detail with the airlines that will take you back to Taiwan) or even Shekou in Shenzhen. So, if you decide to take a ferry, you will have to buy your ferry ticket in advance through CKS - Chu Kong Passenger Transport Company website and print it out. You will have this printout with you, ready to present it when needed. Also, you will have to take exactly that ferry that you have bought your ticket for.

As you can see, this option: Taiwan - Guangdong province - Hong Kong is definitely eligible for 144 hour visa free transit and you will be able to enjoy your stay there regardless if you arrive as a tourist or for business purposes. Both activities are legal and acceptable.

You are allowed to use this scheme as much as you wish. There is no limit, literally.

Cool, many thanks! This helps a lot!

Additional question
Can I travel into China again after Hong Kong?

e.g. let's say that my 144hrs visa free transit isn't enough for my work.

Can I make the following two trips while being out traveling from Taiwan?
Taiwan -> Guangdong province -> Hong Kong
Stay in Hong Kong for 1 night (do I need to stay any specific number of nights?)
Hong Kong -> Guangdong province -> Taiwan

As already mentioned, there is no limit on the number of how many times you can enjoy 144 hour visa free transit scheme. In reality, the answer is, use them as much as you wish.

When you exit to Hong Kong by ferry, you will have an overnight and that will be perfectly enough to return back to Guangdong province.

Here one extremely important detail. To be eligible for 144 hour visa free transit when entering Guangdong province you always have to fly into it regardless if we are talking about very far countries/territories or a nearby Hong Kong. So, count on the nonstop flight from Hong Kong to Guangzhou as the only eligible way to enter Guangdong province. As you can see, you can exit by ferry, but the entry is by air only. After your stay in Guangdong province, you will fly to Taiwan.

Yes, you can do that as there is no limit on how many times you can use this scheme. One night in Hong Kong before you depart again to Guangdong province will be enough. You should just have in mind one essential detail. You can only fly from Hong Kong to Guangzhou since there are direct (nonstop) flights from Hong Kong to Guangzhou. There is no alternative to flying under 144 hour visa free transit. It is allowed to exit Guangdong by ferry, but you can enter by air only.
