You can use a train from Hong Kong West Kowloon station to Guangzhou (Guangzhou East preferably because it is closer to the city center), but you should arrive at the station 120 minutes ahead of your train departure because both Hong Kong and mainland China formalities are performed at Hong Kong West Kowloon station. Also, you should keep in mind that you will have to buy your ferry ticket from Shekou (port in Shenzhen) to Macau before your departure from Hong Kong toward mainland China because you will be asked to present that ticket at the time of performing the formalities in Hong Kong West Kowloon station. So, when returning from Guangzhou toward Macau, the ferry is the only logical option.
