The first itinerary requires to leave Guangzhou by ferry and the train is not eligible for the 24-hour visa-free transit. As for the second itinerary, there is no problem.

There are 4 eligible railway ports: Guangzhou Tianhe railway port, Dongguan railway port, Foshan railway port, Zhaoqing railway port.

However, once Hong Kong - Guangzhou through trains from Tianhe railway station have stopped service and the present high speed railway station is not included in the list above. So taking a train is not eligible and a ferry is more recommended.
