72 hour visa exemption or tourist visa?

I am travelling from London -> Shanghai -> Taipei (and returning Taipei -> shanghai -> London) and I am unsure if I need a tourism visa or I can benefit form the 72 hour exemption?

I will be staying in Shanghai for 2 days on the way out, and 1 day on the way home. So Under 72 hours each time.

Am I eligible for a 72 hour visa exemption or will I need a multi-entry tourism visa?

How can I confirm whether I need an exemption or a visa?

Thank you

The 72-hour has been expanded to 144-hour visa free transit. Both your itineraries are eligible for it. Just apply for it upon landing in show with your passport and onward tickets.

That is incredibly helpful to know - thank you very much.

Is there any official documentation or web link I can see for confirmation? I believe in your reply, I am thinking that I might need to point out official documentation to immigration if they say something else when I land.

Someone else mentioned that some officials dispute the end destination of Taiwan as a valid destination for the 72 hour / 144 hour exemption policy.

You may refer to the document on Chinese National Immigration: en.nia.gov.cn/n162/n227/c58840/content

In fact, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan here are all considered the third destination, so don't worry.
