If you only apply as a tourist in Kuala Lumpur, it can be highly risky to be rejected.

You maybe can make use of the 144-hour visa free transit, by makinga trip like Kuala Lumpur - wider Sahnghai area - Germany.

I am not going to take any airplanes going back to Germany. I want to enter via train fro Laos to Kunming and from Kunming to Ürümqi by train. From Ürümqi to Kazakhstan by train or bus. No hotel stay planned. Just going through China the fastest way possible. Would a 144 hour transit visa applicable for this train journey?

This kind of travel is not eligible for the 144-hour visa-free transit so it is necessary for you to obtain a visa in advance.

I am registered by the German government as a citizen living abroad outside the EU without any address registered. I am living on a boat and have no fixed address.
Though my Malaysian son, a minor, is going to school in KL.
Would I have a chance of obtaining a visa in KL then?

If you have a Malaysia residence permit, you can apply for a visa in KL.
