Traveling with layover

Hi there,
I have a flight to China with a stopover in Japan, is that allowed for 144h visa?

EWR - > HND
(3 hrs later) HND -> PEK
(2 days later) PEK -> HND
(5 days later) HND -> EWR

For reference the round trip EWR - HND is one ticket, and the round tip HND - PEK is a separate ticket
