144 visa free in transit

We intend to visit Chengdu on the way to Japan and Xi an on the way back from Japan beginning of next year (Year 2024). Can we enter these cities under 144 hours visa free in transit? If we travel by a Chinese airline which stops at Shanghai for few hours on the way to Xi an. Can we still claim 144 hours visa free in transit in Xi an?

You can only stay in one transit area in mainland China without any other stops under the 144-hour visa-free transit. If you you have stopped in Shanghai and then Xi'an, it is not eligible. Australia - Chengdu - Japan is well eligible.

It does not matter which airlines you use. But the premise is that the airline staff allow you to get onboard the flight without a ready China visa.
