Hi,
You need just a small adaptation... Trains used to be, but are not any more eligible way to exit mainland China toward Hong Kong. So, you are advised to take ferry from either Nansha (south from Guangzhou) or Shekou in Shenzhen provided by CKS - Chu Kong Passenger Transport. If you do this, you will be eligible for 144 hour visa free transit.
Please, just have in mind that you will have to buy a ferry ticket in advance, print it out and have it with you. Also, you will really have to depart by the ferry you have bought your ticket for.
