About:24-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Temporary entry permit for Africans living in Australia

Hi there, I have a Sierra Leonean passport but live in Australia. I am stopping in Guangzhou for 19 hours on my way from Australia to the UK. When in Guangzhou, I would like to leave the airport to see some friends from when I previously studied in China and make use of the China Southern free transit accommodation. However, I have seen on the China Southern website that foreigners on the 24 hour transit visa are not typically not provided a temporary entry permit to leave the airport. Do you know if this is true? Otherwise I will apply for a G transit visa in Australia.

You will be definitely covered by 24 hour visa free transit and you do not need any kind of visa. Also, you can apply for a temporary entry permit upon your landing, but as you have mentioned, you can never be completely certain if the permit will be granted because it depends entirely on discretion of airport officials. When the transit times are longer, they usually grant the permits to allow the passengers to have a normal time for sleeping in a hotel outside the airport, however, I am repeating, you can really never be 100% certain that it will be granted.
