About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Hello, I am planning on doing London > Shanghai > Tokyo

And return the same way Tokyo > Shanghai > London, would that then be 2 separate 144 hour visa free transit applications?
Would I be able to do those applications in advance? If so, how long?
