Visa free travel - shanghai and beijing

Hi, I'm looking at travelling from the UK - Hong Kong - Shanghai - Tokyo - Beijing - Hong Kong - UK. Would this route be eligible for two 144 hour visa's in both Beijing and Shanghai as Japan is between them? It would be for roughly 3 days in Beijing and 3 days in Shanghai with 7 days in Japan in between. (British passport) Thanks!
