Travel to Hong Kong / Macau when Passport is expired?

I'm asking this on behalf of my close friend who's passport expired 10 months ago. It is a Chinese SAR Macau passport. When a more normal level of travel returns and flights are available from UK to Hong Kong, will she be able to travel home using the expired passport? She thinks she can and then travel to Macau and renew her passport in Macau. I believed all airlines required you to have a "Valid" passport for them to carry you and that "Valid" included it being in date? I even more strongly believed that any country's immigration system required a valid passport to permit entry?
