Do we need a visa?

We are US citizens flying from Toronto to Shanghai. We are staying from 7/21 in Shanghai until we cruise on 7/25. We return to Shangai on 8/2 on cruise and go directly to airport to fly to Singapore. Do we qualify for 144 hour visa? Cruise is through Japan.

Karen, so your route is Toronto - Shanghai - Japan - Shanghai - Singapore? If there is no other stopovers, you qualify for the 144h visa-free transit in Shanghai for the first entry and 24h visa-free transit for the second entry.
