Going on cruise out of Shanghai

I am going on a cruise out of Shanghai to Japan. I fly in from the United States on Friday, May 22nd, will be in Shanghai till Sunday, May 24th before going out on cruise. We arrive back in Shanghai on Sunday, May 31st. We fly out that day. We are not with a tour group. I'm thinking we'll need the Chinese visas, but technically we aren't in country for more than about 60 hours. So just trying to confirm before we go through the process of getting the visas.

Thanks!

Brendan, if your route is US - Shanghai - Japan - Shanghai - US, and you don't stop over other cities, you can make use of the visa-free transit for both times you are in Shanghai.
