About:24-Hour Visa-Free Transit

TWOV for cruise passengers

Hi, I am flying into HK from the UK, travelling around, Beijing, Xi’An for 6 days then a cruise from Pudong to Japan for 6 days. I then return from the cruise back to China for a return flight to the UK from HK. Does this qualify?
Is it 2 separate transits?

Sarah, if your precise itinerary is:

UK - Hong Kong - mainland China (Beijing, Xi'an, Shanghai...) - Japan - mainland China - Hong Kong - UK

In that case you are eligible for 240 hour visa free transit - twice and you do not need any kind of visa. The first time on your Hong Kong - mainland China - Japan segment and the second time on your Japan - mainland China - Hong Kong section of your entire itinerary. The basic rule of 240 hour visa free transit strictly requires that the immediate points before and after mainland China have to be in two different countries or eligible territories (eligible territories are Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau) and your entire itinerary is perfectly aligned with that rule - twice. I wish you a wonderful journey.
