About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Arriving in Shanghai

If I arrive in Shanghai from Europe and have a connecting flight to Bangkok 2 days later , I presume I do not need a visa. But what happens when I have a return flight from Bangkok to Shanghai and the continue with another carrier from Shanghai back to Europe. 1) can I still stay in Shanghai a few days without a visa ? 2) What if I only have an overnight, either at the airport or in the city, so I will leave the city maximum 24 hours later ? Is a visa then still not required ? Many thanks.

Louisa, both of your itineraries are eligible for visa free transit schemes and you definitely don't need any kind of visa.

Your first stop in Shanghai is naturally qualified for 144 hour visa free transit without any doubt.
Your second stop in Shanghai is also eligible for 24 or 144 hours visa free transit regardless of the length of your stay and the nature of your itinerary. It is perfectly allowed to have separate tickets and unrelated itineraries. So, you will decide whether you will stay in Shanghai for just a couple hours or for 6 days. It will be just up to your decision. In any case, you will travel absolutely visa free.

You should just print out your flight tickets and your accommodation bookings.
