About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Arriving and departing by cruise ship

we will be arriving in Shangai as a stop during an Asian cruise we will arrive in Shangai and be docked there for 2 days then the cruise will move on to another location (Okinawa) - would this qualify for the 144 transit without visa ? If so, are we allowed to wander all around Shangai on our own during this period ? (We have US passports)

You do not need a visa if your port of call before Shanghai is located in neither Japan nor Mainland China. After arrival simply go to the 144-hour transit table to get your entry permit.
