About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Do we still need to register at police station if we rent an AirBnB flat?

Hi! Thank you so much for the info!
We are going to apply for this visa, when we arrive from Copenhagen to Shanghai in February. We then will stay at AirBnb for 3 days before departing with our cruise ship and in a week we are back ship to airport without stays. Do we need to register at the police station, or is it out hosts duty? Do we need it at all with such visa?
Thanks in advance. Alex.

You have to register at the police within 24 hours (72 hours in rural areas).
If you don't do it, it'll be recorded and next time you'll get denied the twov.

Thank you, Thomas.
I've heard that the hotel\host should do this for us. Is it so? Out AirBnB host kind of waved it off by saying that he can provide the needed documents. Will hotels do that for us? We don't want to waste time at offices.

Hotels do this for you, private persons not.

If you don't wanna waste time at the police station, you should stay in a hotel.

Thomas, do you know if this option will work?

The web-site they mention there doesn't open here (outside of China?).

Also is there a guide description of how complicated long the registration process is (we'll stay in the central Shanghai, near Yu Gardens)?
P.S. Thank you so much for help, really appreciate it.

It’s not that complicated to register at the police station, but you must have the full co-operation of your host. For various reasons, this is not always forthcoming. If your host sounds in any way reluctant then exercise caution and stay in a hotel.

To be honest, I don't know why you wanna use AirBnB in China.
Hotels are pretty cheap (just have a look at ctrip and you'll find many hotels for cheap).
Hotels send all your details to the police station online.
If you register by yourself, it can be done in 1 hour if you have all documents ready.
Or 3-4 hours, that's totally different.

btw. do you speak chinese?
If there's nobody at the police station who speaks english properly, it can be a long stay there.

No, we don't speak Chinese, thanks for the heads up. Btw, do you know if Online registration works well? It seems that they've streamlined the process quite a bit since November.

I just know that you can register online through wechat.

But I don't know if every police station have an english form yet.

You can ask your landlord to help you through the progress.
