About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Cruise to Japan

Hi there, we are a family of 3 all British Passport and we will be flying from Singapore to Shanghai then take a cruise from Shanghai to Japan. I heard some British passport were denied to enter China even they are eligible for the 144hr visa free transit. Just want to check if our trip will be eligible for visa free transit? Our flight will be singapore - transit in HK- shanghai - cruise to Japan. We will arrive shanghai on 13Feb morning and cruise will depart on the same day.

Your itinerary is fine. Googled for a bit and it seems like Beijing immigration (not Shanghai) was targeting those with previous entry records to Mainland China, and the most likely reason was that some failed to register with the police within 24 hours after arrival during previous visits. If you have not visited Mainland China before then there should be little to worry about. However, do be aware that it is mandatory to present yourself to the police for registration if you are not checking-in a hotel within 24 hours of arrival.

Of course if you are departing on the same day you do not have to worry about that.
