Cruise from Shanghai

I am taking a cruise that leaves and returns to Shanghai (7 nights) Royal Caribbean to and from Wusongku Baoshan Port with my 11 year old daughter. I would like to come to Shanghai and see the sights for 3 days before the cruise and then we will leave right after it is over. We will travel direct from the US to PVG with no layovers. Will I need a visa for this? Is there someone that I can call to confirm if I will or will not need one?

Heather, your situation is quite simple. You will be eligible for 144 hour visa free transit during your first stop in Shanghai and for 24 hour visa free transit during your second stop in Shanghai. You will just check the following conditions to confirm your eligibility:

- You have mentioned that your flight from US to Shanghai is non stop and this is fine
- Your cruise is not allowed to have its first port of call, immediately after Shanghai, in mainland Chinese port
- Your cruise is not allowed to have its last port of call, immediately before Shanghai, in mainland Chinese port
- Your flight from Shanghai to, I assume US, is not allowed to have any additional stop within mainland China and in country where your cruise will have its last port of call, immediately before Shanghai

So, if the above mentioned conditions are fulfilled, you are definitely eligible for 144 and 24 hour visa free transit any you don't need any kind of visa.

You will print out your flight and cruise tickets and also a confirmation of your accommodation booking in Shanghai.
