About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

we are arriving with HAL cruise in Shanghai and plan to stay for max 48 hrs in Shanghai and then

fly back directly to Amsterdam from PVG airport. We have a Dutch passport. Can we apply for the 72 hour visa free period and how do we get this? Can we apply at the cruise terminal in Shanghai?

You are eligible for 144 hour visa free transit if your itinerary fulfills the following two conditions:

- Your cruise is not allowed to have its last port of call, immediately before Shanghai, in mainland China
- Your flight from Shanghai to Amsterdam is not allowed to have any additional stop within mainland China.

If the above conditions are fulfilled, you are definitely eligible for 144 hour visa free transit in Shanghai area. You should bring printouts of your flight ticket and the confirmation of your accommodation booking.

72 hour visa free transit has been replaced in Shanghai by 144 hour visa free transit a couple of years ago and you will apply for this visa free transit scheme at the cruise terminal upon your docking in Shanghai.
