Your itinerary is eligible for 24 or 144 hour visa free transit and you don't need any kind of visa, but under the following conditions:

- Your cruise is not allowed to have its first port of call, immediately after Shanghai, in mainland China
- Your cruise is not allowed to have its last port of call, immediately before Shanghai in mainland China

I'm more than certain that your cruise will have only Japanese ports of call beside Shanghai, of course, but I'm telling you this just to double check your itinerary.

During your first stop, you will be almost certain eligible for 144 hour visa free transit or better to say, it will be 144 hour TWOV if your stay in Shanghai, calculated from your scheduled arrival, until your scheduled departure by cruise will be more than 24 hours. Your second stop will be covered by 24 hour visa free transit because I assume that your stay in Shanghai will be less than 24 hours. You are fine without a visa in any of the mentioned cases.

Have your flight and cruise tickets printed out and have those printouts with you along with your accommodation booking confirmation for your overnight in Shanghai.
