About:24-Hour Visa-Free Transit

less than 24h layover in shanghai

Hello,

I'm Traveling to Thailand and Malaysia.

My flight is from Toronto to Shanghai ( 15h layover) - Bangkok and I have my tickets from Thailand to Malaysia and from Malaysia. I'm Traveling with A Canadian Issued Refugee Travel Document and I have Visas for both countries. I have 15 h layover in Shanghai and I was wondering If I need a transit visa ? I'm not planning to leave the airport.

Thanks for your help!

Recent practice indicates that you are eligible for 24 hour visa free transit in Shanghai and you don't need any kind of visa.

You will print out your flight tickets and I assume that you are flying on a single (through) ticket all the way to Bangkok because this is the situation preferred by Chinese authorities and you will bring those printouts with you. Also, you will declare at check-in in Toronto that you will travel to Bangkok via Shanghai using 24 hour visa free transit.

Upon arrival in Shanghai, you will just clear the necessary and required procedures and you will remain within the transit area of the airport. In reality, you could apply for a temporary entry permit at 24 hour visa free transit counter, but sincerely, I doubt that they will grant it to you because of your refugee documents.
