About:Chinese Embassy in U.S.A.

Stopover

For an American citizen, if I am flying to Thailand from and the flight has a stopover at the Shanghai airport, do I need to apply for a visa?

It depends on your route, if it looks like US - Shanghai - Thailand, you may enjoy the visa-free transit.
