if i travel from Bangkok to shanghai the to USA will the 144 transit work

If you travel:

Bangkok - Shanghai - US

And you don't have any additional stop within mainland China of any kind, you will be definitely eligible for 144 hour visa free transit in Shanghai area and you don't need any kind of visa.
