About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Layover in Shanghai Pu Dong International Airport

I have a short layover at Shanghai Pu Dong Intl. Airport. I do not have a visa to enter China but I believe according to the 72-hour Visa-Free Transit Law I should be able to step outside the airport for a little while. I wanted to know without my USA passport will I be able to hit up downtown Shanghai and would it be worth it?

Thank you so much for your help!

Define short layover. If you are scheduled to stop under 24 hours you will only be allowed the 24 hour direct transit. Its up to immigration and how they feel that day whether they will also give you the temporary entry permit to leave the airport. If it's just a daytime stop and not overnight with a confirmed hotel reservation, they may make you spend the time in the international transit area of the airport during your layover. Go to the 24/144 hour visa free transit desk upon arrival and fill out the blue form and hope for the best
