72 hour visa exemption

Does the 72 hour visa exemption apply if I have an Australian passport and am cruising from Hong Kong to Shanghai via The Phillipines, Taiwan, Japan and South Korea.
My husband and I want to spend one night in Shanghai before flying home via Hong Kong.

If the port prior to Shanghai is Hong Kong you need a visa or you need to fly home through a different country than Hong Kong.
