About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

I am flying USA - SHANGHAI - JAPAN (layover 3 hour) - USA

Hello

1st flight - USA to Shanghai ( direct flight)
2nd Flight Shanghai to USA ( Layover in Tokyo)

Does this work because it's technically USA - SHANGHAI - TOKYO - USA

USA - Shanghai - Japan, that's all what counts for the chinese immigration.
They don't care about your final destination, just the last/first countries before/after China are important.
