shanghai stopover

Hello and thanks for your help. Just confirming I will qualify for free transit traveling from Australia to Sapporo Japan with an overnight stopover in Shanghai. I will be staying just outside the airport precinct.
If this is correct, all i need to do is notify the airline during check-in, and then go to the immigration desk when I arrive in Shanghai?
