About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

Canadian flying from Vancouver to Nepal by China eastern with 2 stops in China. Need visa or not?

I am a Canadian citizen flying from Vancouver (Canada) to Kathmandu (Nepal). Here is my flight detail: I'm flying from Vancouver (YVR) to Nanjing (NKG) and then there is a 1 hr 40 m layover and then to Kunming (KMG) where I have a 17h 50m layover and then finally to Kathmandu. This is by China Eastern Airlines. My question is: does the 72-hour visa-free transit rule applies to me or do I need to apply for a visa before boarding the plane in Vancouver. Your advice is much appreciated.

It depends how long do you stay in China.
If your scheduled arriving time till your scheduled departure time is longer as 24h, then you need a visa.
If it's under 24h, you're covered by the 24h twov.
You can't definitely not use the 72/144h twov as it doesn't allow 2 stops in China in different regions.

Hi Thomas, Thank you for your response. It has two stops -one in Nanjing and one in Kunming but the total times for of the layover plus the flight duration between Nanjing to Kunming is less than 24 hour. Do I still need a trnasit visa? Here is the details:

Vancouver to Nanjing-
1h 40m stop at Nanjing (NKG)

Nanjing (NKG) to Kunming (KMG) Flight duration: 3hr 10m

17h 50m stop Kunming (KMG)

Kunming (KMG) to Kathmandu (KTM)

You'll stay 23 hours in China and covered by the 24h twov, that means you don't need any kind of visa.

Thank you for the response. I now understand that I don't need a visa because the total transit time is 23 hrs (less than 24 hrs). Now my next question is : if the plane is delayed by 1 or more hours in the transit airport, then my total layover/transit time will be more than 24 hours. Will this situation create a problem?

No problem as just the scheduled arriving and departure time counts.
If your flight is delayed, well it's not your problem and you won't get any problems.
