About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Can I enter China visa-free if I fly from Vancouver to Shanghai with a layover in HK?

I am travelling to China with my husband and daughter next year. We all hold Canadian passports.

This is our itinerary for our multi city trip:
1) Vancouver (YVR) to Shanghai (PVG) with a 2.5 hour layover in Hong Kong (HKG) with Cathay Pacific. We arrive in Shanghai on Feb 13, 2025
2) On Feb 17, we will fly from Shanghai (PVG) to Taipei (TPE) with EVA Airlines
3) On Feb 22, we will fly from Taipei (TPE) to Hong Kong (HKG) with Cathay Pacific
4) On March 7, we will fly from Hong Kong (HKG) to Vancouver (YVR)

Yes, your itinerary is definitely and without any doubt eligible for 240 hour visa free transit and you do not need any kind of visa. Your layover in Hong Kong is not at all problematic because Hong Kong is an eligible territory when traveling on 240 hour visa free transit. In reality in order to be eligible for 240 hour visa free transit the main requirement is that your immediate points before and after mainland China are located in two different countries or eligible territories (eligible territories are Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau). In other words, in your itinerary your immediate points are Hong Kong and Taiwan. Perfect. You are good to go and I wish you a wonderful journey.
