About:How to Travel from Hong Kong Airport to Shenzhen

I plan to transit through Hong Kong from San Francisco to my destination in Cambodia.

If I arrive in HKG, can I transit to SZX without a Chinese visa if a have a departing flight the same day? Would I go through Customs in HKG and SZX?

You are eligible for 24 hour visa free transit if your flight is San Francisco-HK-SZX-Cambodia. You need to go through customs.
