About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit in Guangdong

Leaving from Macau Airport

I wonder if I can get the 144h visa free transit for Guangdong with this travel route. I’m planning to arrive at Guangzhou Baiyun Airport from Germany with stop over in Istanbul on Dec. 28. Then I plan to leave from Gongbei Port in Zhuhai to Macau on January 2. and take a flight on the same day from Macau to Thailand. They say all of Guangdong‘s port are eligible for the exit of Guangdong. So I think it should be fine, because I could show them my flight ticket from Macau to Thailand which is still in the 144h range, but I fear they will not accept it.

Ok thank you for your answer. But if I take the flight from GZ again it should be fine right?

So the itinerary would be (Germany) - Istanbul - Guangzhou - Thailand

Do I even have to declare Istanbul on my itinerary if I don’t pass the immigration there?

Nico, unfortunately, you simply cannot do that. It is true that there are many eligible ports, but also you need a trans border transport to be allowed to enjoy 144 hour visa free transit. So, you are definitely not allowed to travel to Zhuhai and cross the border at Gongbei crossing on foot. This is ineligible.

The only two ways how you can enter Macau from Guangdong province are:

- To take a ferry from Shenzhen Shekou port to Macau
- To take a plane from Jieyang Chaoshan airport to Macau

In other words, even before your travel to Guangzhou, you will have to book a ticket for a ferry or for a flight from Jieyang Chaoshan airport to Macau.

Really, at the time being there is no third option and you should dismiss an option with Zhuhai to Macau crossing because you will not be allowed to board the plane already in Germany or in Istanbul.

Also, you should have in mind that your itinerary, that you will declare, is:

(Germany) - Istanbul - Guangzhou - Macau - (Thailand)

Everything before Istanbul and everything after Macau is not of interest for Chinese immigration authorities.

You mean, without going to Macau? If this is the case, your itinerary will be:

Istanbul - Guangzhou - Thailand

This itinerary is definitely eligible for 144 hour visa free transit and you are free to stay and travel within the entire Guangdong province.

You have to declare Istanbul as part of your itinerary because the rule for visa free transit simply states: Only the immediate points before and after your Chinese destination matter. So, as I have already told you, everything that Chinese authorities take care is your last stop before Guangzhou and your next step after Guangzhou. This is the crucial part for visa free transit scheme. It really doesn't matter whether you will be in Istanbul just for a transit or for 10 days.
