Is it possible to do a Hong Kong-Shanghaï-Macao trip without a visa?

Yes, of course. This particular route is definitely eligible for 144 hour visa free transit in Beijing area if your citizenship belongs to a group of 53 eligible countries. Also, you should have in mind that your flights have to be nonstop.

There is no rule on how much time you have to spend in Macau after your arrival from mainland China and departure to Hong Kong. You can stay in Macau for a couple of hours or for several days. This is absolutely up to your choice.
