About:Visa on Arrival

Exit port same as entry port

I plan to enter Shenzhen through Shekou port coming from HKG airport, spend one night in town and leave from SZX airport on an international flight the next day. Is that possible with the VOA or do I have to return to Hong Kong again?

All you have mentioned is perfectly allowed, but you should take care that your flight from Shenzhen to some other country has to be a direct or better to say a nonstop flight that will not have any additional landings within mainland China. Also, please plan accordingly your transfer to Shenzhen Shekou terminal because of the opening hours of VOA facility there: 9:00 - 13:00 & 14:30 - 17:00. It is fine if your flight arrives within the opening hours, but if this is not the case, you will take an overland route preferably via Lo Wu / Luhou border crossing.
