Japan - China - USA, but need to transfer in China

I plan to take a trip from japan to shenyang, stay Shenyang for 2 days, then to USA. There is no direct flight and I need to transfer at Shanghai. So the flight is Japan - Shanghai - shenyang, Shenyang - Shanghai - USA. Can I use 72hour transit visa free? Thanks
