flying Adelaide to Shanghai leaving the next day on cruise to Hong Kong , will 144 hr visa be OK ?

There are no direct flights between Adelaide and Shanghai. It will depend on which country you arrive in Shanghai, as long as the stop prior is not Hong Kong nor another mainland city then you can do 144 hour transit.
