72hr transit visa if I am flying from SFO and back to SFO?

Hi,

Do I need to apply for tourist visa or can I use the transit visa if my stay is less than 72 hours? I am flying from SFO and back to SFO, so there is no other country involved and am flying into Beijing (PEK)
