German national travelling to Taipei, stop-over Shanghai (3days)i

I (a German) will be travelling with my Japanese wife and grown-up daughter who has German nationality.

We fly from Germany via Beijing to Taipei (short stop-over = a few hours in Beijing) but on the way back from Taipei we will stay 3 days / 2 nights in Shanghai before flying back to Germany.

Do we need a visa ? (answer may be different for German national and Japanese national)

You definitely don't need any kind of visa because your first stop in Beijing will be perfectly covered by 24 hour visa free transit and your second stop in Shanghai by 144 hour visa free transit.

As you can see, you have two, definitely eligible itineraries for visa free transit in China:

Germany - Beijing - Taipei

Taipei - Shanghai - Germany

You should just take care that you don't have any additional landing within mainland China of any kind.

By the way, the above mentioned is valid for you and your daughter as German citizens and your wife simply doesn't have to bother with these details because Japanese citizens can enter, stay and travel within China visa free.

One more detail, if your itinerary has different airports in Beijing or in Shanghai, it is all just fine and perfectly eligible for all types of visa free transit. This is more indicated for Shanghai where Hongqiao airport offers quite a large number of flights to Taiwan.
