About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Would this work?

Boston -> Shanghai (via Montreal) -> Shangai -> Tokyo (I stay there one day) finally coming back Tokyo -> To Boston.

Yes that is good, Its evaluated as Canada > Shanghai > Japan since country immediately before and after are what matters

Of course. If you are a US or a citizen from 53 eligible countries, your itinerary is definitely eligible for 144 hour visa free transit in Shanghai area.
