Need a visit or will I be exempt using the 144 hour rule?

2 x British passport holders arriving Hong Kong from UK 23 Jan, then onto Bangkok then back to HK 1 Feb when we'll enter China via Shenzhen via Lo Wu Station border control. Then back to HK 5 days later onto London 9 Feb. Do we need a visa if staying only in Guangdong area? Many thanks!
