About:24-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Shanghai Pu Dong from Seoul

I want to stop by Shanghai before I go back to the US. If I get tickets to Shanghai from Seoul to stay there for less than 24 hours and again stopover in Seoul for a few hours before back to the US. Is this still regard as visiting or stopover?
So my itinerary will look like this: Seoul-Shanghai Pu Dong (1day) - Seoul (3 hours) -Seattle

That obviously requires a visa. South Korea-China-South Korea is clearly not a transit and therefore cannot qualify for transit without visa under any circumstances.
