About:144-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Hong Kong Layover

Leaving from JFK to Shanghai with a layover (1hr) in Hong Kong. My return flight is direct to Hong Kong. Does this qualify under the 144hr rule even though there is a layover in the final destination country? Or does it not matter since the origination will be the USA?

If you are flying Hong Kong-Shanghai-Hong Kong then you need a visa. No other part of your itinerary is relevant.

I spoke with the Shanghai immigration office today. They said there can't be any lay over if it's the same as the destination. Meaning, evening though I would be leaving from the US with a stop in HKG, I can't fly from PRC back to HKG after under the 144hr visa. Therefore I booked a direct flight from the US to Shanghai with a return to HKG
