To be allowed to exit the airport, you will apply for a temporary entry permit upon your landing in Kunming where you will approach 24 hour visa free transit counter. I advise you to book your accommodation in advance and to have a confirmation of accommodation booking as a printout. Your chances to be allowed to exit the airport are very good, but you have to be always aware that the issuing of the permit always depends on discretion of immigration authorities on a day of your arrival.
