Emma, if you have international to international connection in Guangzhou on a single (through) ticket, you will not be allowed to exit the airport because since recently Guangzhou airport has introduced the policy that will not allow the passengers on international to international connections flying on a single ticket, to be granted a temporary entry permit (to be allowed to exit the airport).
Anyway, you can try to obtain one by approaching 24 hour visa free transit counter where you will apply for a temporary entry permit. The chances are really slim, but nothing will happen if you are denied the permit. You will then just wait for your onward flight within the transit area of Guangzhou airport.
By the way, you will obviously fly on 24 and not on 72/144 hour visa free transit, since your entire transit time will be less than 24 hours! Also, you should use correct terminology because this is not 24 hour visa, but 24 hour visa free transit. In other words, there is no visa at all.
