About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Return flight from London to Kuala Lampur through Shanghai

Hi, Please advise We have a flight scheduled LON-PVG-KUL with a 12h layover, what do we have to use 24h or 144h transit visa, do we have to apply before or on arrival? We want to leave the airport and see something of Shanghai for few hours?

Return KUL-PVG-LON - with 4h layover in Shanghai perhaps we wont be able to go out of the airport, do we have to apply again for 24h or it is automatic visa. I have dual citizenship British and Bulgarian, both countries are eligible for the transit visa I think

You do not need a "transit visa", which is something that you apply for and pay for in advance. To avoid confusion at London, always use the words "transit without visa", because you do not need a visa for either flight to China. Whether you are permitted to leave the airport or not will depend on whether immigration will issue you with a temporary entry permit - this is not automatically granted and depends (among other things) on the length of the connection and whatever rule is in effect on the day.

Hi Saul, Thank you. It is still confusing for me. You telling me that I can board LON-PVG flight , notify the airlines at the desk that I intend to use transit ( for 2 days) , then got my luggage and go to the immigration desks at PVG and wait to be granted 72 hour transit. Then depart from PVG-KUL?

Hi Saul, sorry I have read your reply carefully now. Thank you! I have another question - if I buy tickets LON-PVG-KUL and intend to stay 2 days in Shanghai do I have to go through the same procedures and the 2 days transit will be granted at the airport or I need that arranged in advance? I have changed my mind and intend to stay more in the city prior to explore. I have been advised from a friend that 12 hour layover is not enough to explore Shanghai.

REGARDS
