About:Hainan 30-Day Visa-Free Access

Free Visa for Germany - China - Austria?

Hi there, I am from Austria and want to do a roundtrip in Hainan. Is it possible to get the free visa if my starting Airport is in Germany? For example Munich Airport via Peking to Sanya and after 2 weeks back from Sanya via Peking to Vienna?

So it doesnt matter where to start, but the transit flight in between does matter, if I got it right.
But what happens if there is a direct flight from Germany to Hainan, can I direct flight back from Hainan to Germany? And if not, would a direct flight Hainan to Austria be possible? In short: Germany - Hainan - Austria?

You can start your trip from anywhere in the world, but you are not allowed to reach Hainan by a direct flight from any mainland China airport. In other words, your proposed itinerary where you have a flight Beijing - Sanya is not allowed and you would need a Chinese tourist (L) visa obtained in advance to accomplish this route. You should definitely look for some airport that is not located within mainland China and best among them are Hong Kong, Bangkok and Singapore. Beside Sanya, you can also rely on another Hainan airport - Haikou.

Please, keep in mind that you can use flight options that transit through mainland China to reach Hong Kong, Bangkok and Singapore. This is allowed and sometimes the flights that transit through China are the cheapest. Anyway, please, just keep in mind that you have to arrive to Hainan and also to leave it by flying to non mainland Chinese airports. After you have reached Hong Kong or Bangkok by direct flight from Hainan, you can return to Germany by a flight that transits mainland China.

A sample of eligible itinerary:

Germany - Beijing - Hong Kong - Hainan
Hainan - Hong Kong - Beijing - Germany

Beside the mentioned, if you use an itinerary of this kind, you are also eligible for a stay in your mainland stop for 144 hours visa free, by using 144 hour visa free transit.

In reality, everything that really matters is that you cannot enter Hainan (its airports are Haikou and Sanya) directly from mainland China. You can use any flight to reach close to it, but in the end, you can enter only by flight that is not directly from mainland China. In other words, you cannot do:

Beijing - Hainan
Shanghai - Hainan
Guangzhou - Hainan

Bit you can do:

Hong Kong - Hainan
Singapore - Hainan
Bangkok - Hainan

Also, you can take a direct flight:

London - Hainan (this one departs from London and flies nonstop to Sanya)

Unfortunately, there are no direct flights from both Germany and Austria to Hainan. Anyway, if you want, you can use:

London - Sanya - London

Please, keep in mind that when you use 30 day visa free access, you are allowed to depart and arrive from the same place. Here the rule of the third country is not valid.
