About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

2 China cities with a Hong Kong stop in between?

Is the following itinerary acceptable under the 72-hour visa rules:
1) Fly USA-->Beijing, stay 2 nights
2) Fly Beijing-->HK, stay 2 nights
3) Fly HK-->Shanghai, stay 2 nights
4) Fly Shanghai-->USA
Also, are there any restrictions on which airlines are used for which leg of the trip, e.g. does the USA-->Beijing leg have to use the same airline as the Beijing-->HK leg?
Thanks!

Under the condition that you are a US or a citizen of 53 eligible countries, your itinerary is definitely eligible for 144 hour visa free transit in both Beijing and Shanghai. There are no restrictions on the type of the ticket (it cannot be a standby ticket, of course) and also on airlines. In other words, you can use separate tickets and different, unrelated airlines. It is important that you print out your tickets and have them with you you.

By the way, 72 hour visa free transit in both Shanghai and Beijing has been replaced by 144 hour visa free transit. Also, you should use correct terminology because it is 144 hour visa free transit and not 144 hour visa rules or similar.
