About:Visa on Arrival

I am a US citizen. Can I get a visa on arrival at Shanghai PVG airport for a 48 hour stay?

I am departing and returning from LAX and am not traveling on to a 3rd country

No, unfortunately not. There is no such an option at all. You will need a visa for your 2 day stay in Shanghai. Anyway, this is not such a problem for US citizens because they are eligible for 10 year multiple entry visa, so if you plan to visit this part of the world within the next 10 years, this is in reality a good investment.
