About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

JFK-HKG-PVG-HKG-JFK

If i book a flight to PVG via HKG - then onwards to HKG (just under 24hr on the ground in PVG) does this qualify for the visa free transit?
I'm slightly confused because I originally wanted a flight JFK-PVG-HKG but now am unable to get that itinerary without a short EXTRA stopover in HKG.

HKG-PVG-HKG requires a visa because it’s not a transit to a third country.
